Preview
Following on what can only be described as a very encouraging start to the league campaign, the ‘Loons’ turn their attention to the Challenge Cup now rebranded as the SPFL Trust Trophy on Tuesday evening when they play host to Highland League side Formartine United at Station Park.
The home side go into the game a little short in numbers with Darren Whyte and Michael Travis now joined on the treatment table by Stefan McCluskey and Sam Fisher, the latter having sustained an injury in training last midweek which will rule him out for some time.
Luke Strachan will also be an absentee on Tuesday evening as he is required by his parent club to participate in the same competition the following evening.
Thankfully Saturday’s goal scorer Mark Gallagher has been given permission by the ‘Dons’ to play for Forfar in the tournament.
This leaves manager Gary Irvine with little room to manoeuvre as regards team selection but Steven Anderson is likely to feature at some point with one or two of those on the bench against Edinburgh City likely to also be given a runout.
Formartine who were last at Station Park for a pre-season joust in July 2018 are managed by Paul Lawson with former Aberdeen skipper Russell Anderson as his right-hand man.
They lost their opening league fixture of the season a couple of weeks back 3-0 to Fraserburgh, but have since then recorded victories over Forres Mechanics and Fort William.
There was an atmosphere to savour at Station Park on Saturday past as fans returned in excellent numbers for the first time in nearly 18 months and a pat on the back to all who backed Ross and his colleagues throughout the ninety minutes in such a positive fashion.
Hopefully, a reasonable turnout can be expected on Tuesday evening for a competition which to be fair has always sat below the Scottish and League Cups in the pecking order.
This season due to covid, it also returns to an all Scottish based tournament with no prospect for the supporters of a trip to ‘foreign’ fields, but nevertheless, the ‘Loons’ players and management will be going all out to secure a second-round trip to Raith Rovers when they take to the Station Park pitch against a visiting team to whom they will give total respect.
Experienced official Alan Newlands is the man in the middle for the tie.
