Betfred Cup – What lies in store for Forfar?
With the new season kicking off with an exciting new format for the league cup here are the main facts you need to know.
What are the key dates?
· The draw will take place live on BT Sport on Friday 27 May 2016 at 7.30pm
· Fixtures and TV selections will be announced w/c 30 May.
· Round Robin matches will be played on each of 16, 20, 23, 27 and 30 July (subject to live broadcast selections).
· The competition concludes with the Betfred Cup Final at Hampden Park on Sunday, 27 November.
Who could Forfar play?
There will be eight groups of five teams. Four groups will be in the North section and four groups in the South section.
Forfar will be drawn in a North Section group of five alongside:
· One of the top seeds in the North section – so one from St Johnstone, Ross County, Inverness Caledonian Thistle or Dundee.
· One of the second seeds in the North section – so one from Dundee United, Falkirk, Raith Rovers or Dumbarton
· Two of the unseeded teams – so two from Dunfermline Athletic, Alloa Athletic, Peterhead, Brechin City, East Fife, Cowdenbeath, Elgin City, Stirling Albion, Montrose, Arbroath and Cove Rangers.
What is the format?
· First round matches will be played in a round robin format with three points awarded for a win, one point for a draw, with drawn matches in the Group Stage going straight to a penalty shoot-out and the winner of the penalty shoot-out being awarded a bonus point.
· Eight First Round Group Stage winners and the four best runners-up progress to the second round and will be joined by the SPFL’s four UEFA qualifying clubs (Celtic, Aberdeen, Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian).
