Summary – Both teams head into this opening league fixture of the season in optimistic mood following encouraging performances in the Betfred Cup and certainly both with new look squads. Jim Weir will have loan signing Lewis Moore in his squad for the game and a deal is almost complete for a second player to join the club this week in a temporary move. Only the final piece of the paperwork jigsaw requires to be complete.
However Andy Munro has a two match ban to serve from his sending off in last season’s final home game against Queens Park, while injury rules out Michael Kennedy and Matthew Aitken. Darren Whyte is also a doubt.
Airdrie manager Stephen Findlay has brought in a dozen new faces in the summer, seven of them in fact featured in last Saturday’s starting line-up in the Lanarkshire derby against premiership Hamilton Accies which ended 1-1 after ninety minutes. One of the newcomers to the ‘Diamonds’ ranks will certainly be a familiar face to home fans, goalkeeper Scott Gallacher making the move from Dumbarton to the Excelsior in the close season.
The sides met on both the opening and final day of the league campaign last season with the ‘Loons’ winning on both occasions, so a repeat result would certainly go down well with all connected with the Athies. However all also know it will be no easy task come Saturday afternoon.
