Preview
Forfar Athletic and SPFL newcomers Kelty Hearts meet for the first time in a competitive fixture at Station Park on Saturday.
The only previous occasion that their paths have crossed was in a Friday night friendly fixture in September of 2017 at New Central Park.
Both teams go into the match with two wins from their two league games played to date.
While the ‘Loons’ have defeated Annan and Edinburgh City 2-0, Kevin Thomson’s charges recorded an opening day 2-0 success at home to Cowdenbeath, before winning 3-1 at Stirling last weekend.
Incidentally, all but one of Kelty’s goals to date were scored by four of the ten newcomers to the Fifers ranks since their play-off success over Brechin City, a similar ratio to their opponents on Saturday.
Thomas Reilly will be a familiar face in the visitors ranks as far as the home support will be concerned.
Despite the Athies highly encouraging start to the season which also saw them record a victory on Tuesday evening in the SPFL Trust Trophy, they have been plagued by injuries that continued when Mark Gallagher had to leave the field of play within four minutes of kick-off against Formartine.
As has been well documented Sam Fisher and Stefan McCluskey have joined Darren Whyte and Michael Travis in a busy treatment room with one of two others due to have their fitness assessed over the next 24 hours.
It has certainly seen the home side’s 22 man squad stretched to its limitations to date but the players have responded and proved equal to the challenge.
Kelty are the bookies' favourites for the title but they will know that there is a long road ahead in still testing times off the park for all concerned.
There was a great atmosphere at Station Park last Saturday, a really glad to back feel about the place and it is to be hoped that will be the case again with a few extra fans including slightly larger travelling support expected through the turnstiles this time round.
Chris Graham is the man in the middle.
This weekend’s other cinch league2 fixtures are as follows;-
Friday – Edinburgh City v Stenhousemuir
Saturday – Annan Athletic v Stirling Albion, Cowdenbeath v Stranraer, Elgin City v Albion Rovers.
