Preview
The ‘Loons’ return home on Saturday to face Albion Rovers in what staggeringly will be one of only two competitive fixtures they will play at Station Park over a nine-week period when they face Albion Rovers for the first time since the spring of 2018.
Surely fixture planning of this nature could have been avoided somehow?
The home side goes into the game having failed to secure a victory in their last five league fixtures although four of these games ended all square including last week’s contest at Central Park against Cowdenbeath.
For some reason, in many, if not all of those games Gary Irvine’s side have dominated the first period in particular but have failed to turn that supremacy into goals, subsequently paying the penalty by the final whistle.
The home support will be hoping that this will all change this weekend and with the firepower at the Athies disposal there is no reason why this should not be the case, at the same juncture cementing a place in the top four of the league table as we approach the end of the first quarter.
Injuries still continue to concern. Stefan McCluskey and PJ Crossan who missed out last week will require fitness checks to see they have responded to a return to training in midweek, while Gary Irvine has another couple of new injury concerns to cope with, although the names are currently ‘under wraps.’
One pleasing aspect of many to be fair to date this season is the way the goals have been shared out with Matty Aitken currently top scorer with four strikes to his name.
Rovers managed by former Ayr United and Morton boss Brian Reid head to Forfar sitting three points behind their opponents, two home wins being recorded to date against Edinburgh City and Cowdenbeath and on the back of a 3-0 defeat at Cliftonhill last Saturday to league leaders Kelty Hearts.
They are still battling away in the SPFL Trust Trophy and face a third-round trip to Cove in a fortnight’s time.
The Rovers added nine players to their squad in the summer, five arriving after departing Stirling Albion.
Saturday’s referee is Graham Grainger who will be handling a ‘Loons’ fixture for the second time this campaign, having been the man in the middle for the first league game of the season down at Annan.
Saturday’s other cinch league 2 fixtures are as follows;-
Annan Athletic v Edinburgh City, Kelty Hearts v Stranraer, Stenhousemuir v Elgin City, Stirling Albion v Cowdenbeath
