PREVIEW
Forfar Athletic will attempt to get back to winning ways when Elgin City come calling at Station Park on Saturday first.
The ‘Loons’ defeat at Stenhousemuir last weekend coupled with Annan Athletic’s midweek victory over Albion Rovers has seen Gary Irvine’s side drop down to third place in the league table although they do have a game in hand over the Galabank outfit.
The Station Park management team will be hoping for a smoother ‘ride’ in the run up to Saturday’s game than was the case for the Ochilview visit.
As has been well documented Marc McCallum tested positive for covid on the morning of the match with second choice keeper Lewis Sanderson having to play when no suitable alternative could be found at such short notice, despite suffering from a fairly desperate chest infection.
It has to be said that Lewis did not let anyone down with an assured performance on the day.
Then a couple of others turned up with a similar problem to Lewis and in fact Craig Slater had to call it a day at half time as he was struggling to get breath.
No one connected with the Athies though hid quite rightly from the disappointing nature of the performance against Steven Swift’s men.
At the time of writing Gary was hopeful Marc will have completed his isolation period succesfully and be able to resume between the sticks and that Craig will have fully recovered from his ailments.
A definite plus is the fact that Archie Thomas has returned to training this past week.
Elgin arrive on the back of an excellent 3-1 home win over Stirling Albion this ending a run of four successive defeats for Gavin Price’s side.
Incidentally Daniel Hoban who was Marc’s understudy at Station Park last term made a rare appearance in goal for the Boroughbriggs outfit against Albion with three of their five January signings also featuring.
This will be the fourth meeting between the sides this season and it is all square at the moment.
The two teams fought out a 1-1 draw up in Moray in August, before goals from Andy Munro and Grant Anderson within one minute of arriving on the pitch as a second half sub clinched a 2-1 win for the ‘Loons’ on home territory in November.
A goal three minutes into added on time from Darryl McHardy sealed all three points for City up at Elgin in January making for a long trip home for those who had made the journey north.
The home squad have two home games on the trot on their immediate menu with Stirling the visitors on Saturday week. All involved will be keen to repeat the heroics of the last home encounter against league leaders Kelty, aided again hopefully by what has been a very supportive fan base in recent times at Station Park.
The referee on Saturday is Daniel Graves who will be making his Station Park debut as a man in the middle.
