PREVIEW
Steve Farrell’s Dumbarton are the visitors to Station Park on Saturday as the home side begin a month which will see them play three home Saturday fixtures in the cinch league2.
Following last weekend’s single goal defeat at Spartans which brought an end to an eleven game unbeaten run, Ray McKinnon’s side go into the clash with the ‘Sons’ still requiring a point or two to make sure of not being dragged into the basement battle as the season reaches it’s conclusion.
Ray felt that the ‘Loons’ were unlucky to lose out thanks to what was deemed by many to be a rather soft penalty award at Ainslie Park, especially after having the better of the play in the first period.
Chances though were few and far between at both ends of the park and Mark McNulty’s conversion of the spot kick was all that stood between the sides at the end of the day.
Ray is confident that his squad will quickly re-group and certainly there has been an optimistic mood at training this week that the players can go out and finish what has been a campaign of mixed emotions and performances on a high note.
Disappointingly the manager does not have a full squad to choose from. Stuart Morrison will sit out the game as he begins a two match suspension following his second half red card in Edinburgh, while Craig Thomson is a doubt due to personal reasons. A couple of other players will also require late fitness tests on arrival at Station Park.
There is no doubt however that there are players of ability waiting in the wings to grab the opportunity with both hands if needs arise.
Dumbarton currently sit in third position in the league table and it would appear that the play-offs await barring an almighty end of season collapse.
They too have had injury problems in recent weeks but arrive at Station Park having picked up seven points from their last three games which included a crazy 6-2 away win against promotion rivals Spartans.
The ‘Sons’ were the last team to leave Station Park with three points ‘under their belts’ back in mid December, courtesy of a 4-2 win, Forfar’s two visits to the banks of the Clyde this season resulting in a 3-1 home success and a 2-2 draw.
The ‘Loons’ will head into the fixture in confident mode, keen to record a win that would have obvious consequences and at the same time continue their unbeaten home league record this calendar year. Hopefully too, the ‘Loons’ squad of today will draw inspiration on the day from the appearance at Station Park of the Class of ’84.
Saturday’s referee Joel Kennedy will be handling a ‘Loons’ fixture for the first time.
C’mon the ‘Loons’
