Preview
The ‘Loons’ welcome Dumbarton to the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park on Saturday, their first home William Hill league2 fixture in four weeks. In the interim we have played two away league fixtures losing by the only goal of the game at Spartans, prior to a day to forget for many a reason on our first ever visit to East Kilbride.
Manager Jim Weir is looking forward to a return to home league action, especially the fact that we now have two successive fixtures on familiar territory. In fact Jim freely admits the first thing he looks for when the fixtures are released in mid summer is those occasions when any club he has been involved in has a home double header. The manager is of the opinion that it gives players a great opportunity to build or in our case on this occasion re-build momentum, the opportunity for the squad to perform on two successive Saturdays in front of a supportive home audience one to be grabbed with both ‘hands.’
Nevertheless as is always the case in this tight league, the home management team know it will be no easy task tomorrow against a more than decent visiting outfit managed by Steve Farrell. Was it not for the five point penalty imposed upon the ‘Sons’ for going into administration last term, they would be sitting on the ten point mark in the league standings and have to date recorded some impressive results an away success at Spartans as Jim remarked, a prime example.
The Athies go into the game with no fresh injury worries following their KDM Trophy success last weekend and welcome Scott Bright to the match day squad. Jim and Gavin have been keen in recent weeks to bring more balance and competition to the left flank of the player pool and Scott who can perform equally as well in a defensive or midfield role has been a player they have been monitoring since the start of the campaign in this regard.
The hunt though continues for a potential replacement for long term injury victim Ross MacLean, but to be fair cover for the front man is also evident within the current squad. A pleasing aspect for all in last weekend’s 4-1 win over Dundee’s youngsters was the fact that four different players got on the score sheet, while a few of the players who have not been regulars in the starting line-up to date in league action did their selection chances no harm.
Dumbarton certainly re-built their squad in the close season and beyond following relegation, in part due to a substantial points deduction during the course of last season by bringing in at the last count sixteen new faces, one of the more eye catching experienced striker Leighton McIntosh who netted a brace in their recent 4-3 win down at Annan. Five of their squad are on temporary transfer agreements, three making the short trip over the Clyde from Paisley, alongside a duo from Ayr United.
The ‘Sons’ won 2-0 on their last visit to Forfar some eighteen months ago and there is no doubt that all wearing the sky blue shirt tomorrow will be going all out to make sure there is no repeat of that score line.
Connor Ashwood is Saturday’s man in the middle, the first time he will have been in charge of a ‘Loons’ fixture.
As ever of course the home support which has frankly been first class this season to date have an important part to play from the first whistle.
C’mon the ‘Loons.’
