Preview
Alan Maybury’s Stirling Albion are the visitors to the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park on Saturday as the ‘Loons’ return to William Hill League2 action after a break last weekend. Manager Jim Weir is confident that the squad will have benefited from the wee rest they have had following their KDM Trophy tie in Glasgow a week past Tuesday, but nevertheless the management team and the players are desperate and looking forward to the return to ‘active service’.
Jim knows that it will be a different Albion side they will face on Saturday to the team they defeated 4- 0 at Forthbank back in November. The defeat the ‘Binos’ suffered at home to East Kilbride last weekend brought to an end a run of three successive league wins, one of those a 4-1 away win at Edinburgh City, a match in which a familiar face to ‘Loons’ supporters ‘Rusty’ McLean netted a hat trick. However the Athies themselves are on a good run in the league, undefeated in their last three outings and unlucky not to get the opportunity of a penalty shoot-out at Lesser Hampden in cup tie action last time out.
Jim realises and will be emphasising to his players the fact that three points on Saturday against a side bolstered by the singing on loan in recent times of Dylan Wells from Motherwell and Harry Welsh from Dundee United would obviously open up a gap to Stirling in the table. Points gained in home fixtures are also undoubtedly going to prove vital in the club’s efforts to attain a play-off spot come early May.
On the availability front we have been in much worse positions earlier in the campaign than is the case for Saturday. Sadly however skipper Stuart Morrison remains sidelined alongside Kieran Inglis and Ross MacLean. There are no suspensions to worry about on this occasion. The Manager though admits to having been dealt a major blow in midweek with Hamilton Accies evoking their right to recall Neil Stafford from his loan deal at Forfar. Jim is actively seeking a replacement who as Neil did so adequately will be a challenge to Marc McCallum in the goalkeeping department. Efforts also continue to add to the squad, Callum Wilson the only January signing to date, although as far as loan signings are concerned, they can still be made in certain circumstances till the end of February. Jim and Gavin also feel it is never a bad thing to freshen up the player pool in January, but only if the right personal become available to them.
The home side will go into Saturday’s clash with two victories having been recorded over their opponent earlier in the campaign. Braces from Martin Rennie and Ross McLean set up a 4-2 success at Station Park in August, while goals from Stuart Morrison, Scott Shepherd, Martin Rennie and Mark Whatley clinched the points in the central belt in mid November. A repeat would no doubt be more than welcomed by all of a ‘Loons’ persuasion this weekend!
Graham Grainger is the referee for Albion’s visit, the first time this season he has handled a Forfar Athletic fixture.
