Summary – The ‘Loons’ head into their first home league fixture of the campaign in good heart following their Betfred Cup exploits and a convincing 2-0 away success on league business at Airdrie last Saturday.
There is little doubt that it would appear as if Jim Weir has recruited well to replace the handful or more players who departed the Station Park scene at the end of last season.
They have also gelled well, despite the manager operating a rotation system in pre-season and in the cup ties.
Little or no change is expected this time round however from last weekend’s starting line-up with skipper Michael Travis sidelined again as he serves the second and final game of his suspension following his red card in the Play-Off semi-final.
At the Penny Cars Stadium last Saturday, the Athies were solid in the first half and perhaps should have been in front at the break, but in the second period, they were in control throughout and unlucky not to add to the goals scored by Andy Jackson and Callum Tapping.
Stranraer began their league season with a 2-2 home draw with Montrose. James Hilton a close-season capture from Ayr United and one of eleven new faces in Steve Farrell’s squad gave them a first-half lead but after the ‘Gable Endies’ had gone 2-1 up with a couple of quick-fire strikes in the 76th and 78th minutes, it was Carlo Pignatiello on loan from Livingston who secured a point with a goal in the 81st minute.
The Stair Park side are always doughty opponents, in fact, last season Jim Weir’s charges took only four points from the four contests between the sides.
They will be looking to improve on that record this time around.
