Summary – Derby match action is the last ‘dish’ of the year for fans of Forfar Athletic and Montrose when their favourites meet for remarkably the fifth time this season already at Station Park on Saturday first.
Honours to date in cup and league are even, though Stewart Petrie’s side go into Saturday’s fixture sitting eight points and three places ahead of the home team in the Ladbrokes League 1 table.
The ‘Gable Endies’ have had a mixed time of late after like the ‘Loons’ falling at the third round stage of the Scottish Cup in late November.
Home defeats from Raith Rovers and Falkirk have followed, the latter last week thanks to an injury-time counter, while victories have been achieved with some aplomb at Dumbarton and at home to Clyde.
The home eleven go into Saturday’s contest in good heart following a rare success down at Stranraer last Saturday.
What will have pleased Stuart Malcolm and his coaching team over the past couple of weeks will be the fact that following a fairly barren scoring run, seven goals have been netted by five different scorers, the disappointing feature the fact that six have been conceded. This after the defence had looked fairly watertight in the opening league games under Stuart’s charge!
The news on the injury front is slightly encouraging following a Boxing Day morning training session at Station Park.
Callum Tapping who pulled up in the warm-up down at Stranraer should be ok, while Michael Travis and Jordan Kirkpatrick will be assessed right up till kick-off time.
Russell McLean is, of course, ineligible to participate against his parent club.
Although the exploits of Forfar Athletic and Montrose have been slightly overshadowed in 2019 by their Championship neighbours at Gayfield, both clubs have had undoubted moments to remember. Both somewhat against the odds qualified for the Championship Play-offs back in April, while the Athies also made it through to the last sixteen of the Betfred Cup.
With a reasonable weather forecast, we live in hope that this may be reflected in Saturday’s attendance figure.
Certainly, Saturday’s hosts have had their setbacks in the opening months of the current campaign, but the ‘ship’ seems to be on a more positive course once again.
A win over their local rivals on Saturday would certainly be a great way to end the year and the decade and would certainly put all involved at Station Park in good spirit for the New Year festivities next midweek.
C’mon the ‘Loons.’
