Jimmy Farquhar’s Funeral
[Monday, 22 June 2020 17:46]
The townspeople of Forfar certainly did our late Club President Jimmy Farquhar proud this morning with ‘Loons’ supporters certainly playing their part as he was laid to rest at Forfar Cemetery.
Sadly as we all now realise due to the current pandemic, no church service could take place and numbers at the graveside service were of greatly restricted.
However, friends from all walks of Jimmy’s very active life took the opportunity to pay tribute to him by turning out to see his funeral cortege make its way from Alexander Bain’s to his final resting place.
There were pockets of people gathered all along the route from the moment the hearse entered the Myre Car Park, the largest numbers being congregated outside St. Margaret’s Church and at Station Park.
Club officials were delighted by the number of Forfar Athletic fans and others who turned up at the park to give Jimmy the send-off he fully merited and deserved.
Applause rang out as the cortege stopped briefly outside the main turnstile block before heading off and back into town and up to Newmonthill.
The Reverend Maggie Hunt then conducted a poignant graveside service.
When one reflects on the numbers who turned out to see the funeral procession go through the town, it would certainly have been a packed church without a doubt in normal times.
Jimmy in his own unassuming manner would have probably wondered what all the fuss was about!
As previously intimated it is hoped that a Memorial Service can be arranged at a later date when normality returns to everyday life.
