PREVIEW
The ‘Loons’ entertain Stenhousemuir on Saturday knowing that their fate as regards finishing in second place in the cinch league2 table as we approach the ‘final hurdle’ is in their own hands.
This feat has been achieved thanks to two excellent performances and results over the past couple of weekends at home to Annan and away to champions Kelty.
The four points gained from these matches has seen Forfar move above Annan into second place thanks to a goal difference margin of seven.
All connected with the Athies will hope this form will be carried forward to the visit of the ‘Warriors’ and beyond with the play-offs looming large on the horizon and the daunting prospect for at least two of the four teams involved in the annual end of season ‘lottery’ at our level anyway of four games in eleven days.
It does however without doubt bring with it a highly exciting climax to the season and one no doubt Gary, his backroom staff and playing squad are eagerly anticipating.
Whether Gary will decide to tinker with his starting line-up to any extent on Saturday with the play-offs in mind is pretty doubtful but all will be revealed before kick-off.
He will be forced into one change by necessity, Stefan McCluskey the hat-trick hero in our last home game forced to sit this one out as he serves a one match suspension following his second half red card at New Central Park.
On the injury front, Andy Munro is making remarkable progress, but Saturday’s game will come too soon for him, Sam Fisher though having proved a very able deputy in recent times.
Another of the youngsters currently on loan with the ‘Loons’ Steven Warnock has looked impressive over the past couple of weeks and he could well be a vital cog in the plethora of matches ahead.
Stenhousemuir head to Station Park, their play-off hopes over following a 3-1 home reverse against Stranraer last Saturday.
Manager Stephen Swift like his Forfar counterpart will be forced into at least one change, on loan custodian Peter Urminsky sent off in the dying embers of that defeat, David Wilson the likely replacement.
The Ochilview outfit are the only team that the ‘Loons’ have failed to inflict defeat upon in league fixtures this season, so Ross Meechan and his colleagues have perhaps extra incentive if any is needed to pick up a three point haul on Saturday.
The sides played out a 1-1 draw in Stirlingshire in early October, before the visitors won an astonishing game 4-3 at Station Park on Boxing Day. The ‘Warriors’ were also rewarded with three points on home ‘soil’ in late February an on the day lack lustre Forfar side losing out 2-0.
Saturday is another day however and the home players will without doubt wish to reward their loyal support with a victory to end what has been following a couple of traumatic seasons an excellent league campaign.
The man in the middle on Saturday Steven Reid will be making his second visit of the season to Station Park.
Match Sponsor – Saturday’s match is sponsored by Strathmore Potatoes Ltd. The Directors would like to pass on their gratitude to loyal ‘Loons’ fan Stuart McIntyre for his continued support.
