PREVIEW
Forfar Athletic will welcome Stirling Albion to Station Park on Saturday first in their re-arranged cinch league2 fixture, both sides going into the game on the back of favourable results and performances last weekend.
As it is the only league fixture on the weekend card, victory for the ‘Loons’ could see them move up to fifth position in the table ahead of two further home fixtures, while a win for the ‘Binos’ would see them move up one place to second, in behind leaders Dumbarton who lost for the first time at Stranraer in midweek.
Back to last Saturday and the Athies got back to winning ways at Coatbridge courtesy of second half counters from Matty Aitken and Kyle Hutton.
It was however the manner of the victory that really impressed the watching ‘Loons’ officials and supporters. The team took a firm grip on proceedings from the first minute and no one was left in any doubt that there was going to be only one winner.
In fact on the day, there were no failures in the white shirted visiting ranks and certainly after a difficult run of results it was such an encouraging ninety minutes.
Gary Irvine is likely to have a similar squad to select from as was the case last week, although as we ‘go to press’ as they used to say, he was very hopeful of having one new face in the ranks to further boost his match day options.
Watch this space!
Darren Young heads north with the Forthbank squad having hit Stranraer with a four goal first half blitz last Saturday.
The most recent of his nine summer additions to the squad, Dundee United loanee Kai Fotheringham netted a brace, Jack Leitch and Dale Carrick the other marksmen.
Stirling have had a bit of early season behind the scenes ‘turmoil’ but to be fair it does not seem to have affected the first team squad in any shape or form.
Last season Albion actually lowered the ‘Loons’ colours on two occasions, the Athies sharing the spoils on one of their two visits to the central belt, a 2-0 win recorded last December at Station Park.
A repeat of that particular outcome will no doubt please the home support on Saturday.
Obviously a few fans will miss this Saturday’s encounter as they head to Hampden to support a national side who were highly impressive in midweek, but it was felt that the opportunity of taking up the spare Saturday available instead of a midweek slot was the better option.
Hopefully the home support in particular will be in good heart and voice and get right behind Craig and his colleagues from the first whistle.
Mention of a whistle and the man in the middle on Saturday is Dan McFarlane who is making his second visit of the season to Station Park having previously handled our Betfred tie with Stranraer.
