Forfar Athletic and Stenhousemuir played out a game of two halves on Saturday as both sides shared the points at Ochilview.
Gavin Reilly put the hosts ahead in the first half while a better Loons performance garnered a Craig Slater equaliser. The supporters and players felt they had scored a late winner when it looked like Seb Ross’ late strike had crossed the line but the referee played on.
Ray McKinnon made three changes from Tuesday’s loss to Stirling as Aitken, Hutton and Flanagan started while Ross and McCluskey dropped to the bench; top goalscorer Ben Armour was missing from the squad.
The Warriors opened the scoring after ten minutes through a smart move that ended with Matty Yates’ low cross being slotted home by Gavin Reilly.
Stenhousemuir looked the better side in the first half as Forfar struggled to deal with their attacks.
Yates volleyed wide shortly before Reilly somehow couldn’t find the net at the back post.
On the stroke of halftime Nicky Jamieson came close from a Yates corner but the Loons were thankful they went in just a goal behind.
It was a different Forfar that came out for the second half and they were on the attack from the get-go as Slater and Flanagan came close in the first two minutes of the half.
McKinnon’s side pulled themselves level in the 56th minute thanks to Slater; his first shot from a Thomson ball was blocked but he made no mistake with the second attempt.
Forfar kept up their pressure with chances from Flanagan and Thomson threatening the Stenhousemuir goal as McCluskey and Ross came on to boost the Loons' attack.
McCluskey forced a save late on from Curtis Lyle, however, the Loons were to feel they had scored a late winner in injury time.
Seb Ross’ shot looked to have crossed the line before it was hacked away by a defender. The Loons players and supporters claimed a goal but the referee and assistant played on.
The result means the Loons are now three points off the playoff spots ahead of Wednesday's game in hand against Dumbarton.
