A tight four-points or a double-digit advantage. That’s the different scenarios that could have presented themselves to Forfar Athletic as they faced League 2 basement boys Clyde at Station Park on Saturday.
After a sterling second-half performance in a proverbial six-pointer, the Loons are now closer to the top four than they are to the bottom spot.
The home side was on top from the get-go, forcing an early corner before Russel McLean almost pounced on a loose ball spilt by keeper Brian Kinnear.
Daniel Scally then brought a cross into the Clyde box down expertly but his shot was blocked at point-blank range for a corner.
As the clock ticked towards the break, the tide began to turn in the visitors’ favour however and Clyde made the breakthrough in the 41st minute. A fierce effort from Leitch was parried away by Marc McCallum but Liam Scullion followed up the rebound and drilled his low drive into the net.
Forfar rang the changes in the second half and they paid off in the 61st minute when they were back on level terms, substitute Rayan Mohammed smashed home his second strike for the Loons after pouncing on a loose ball in the box.
Clyde twice blocked in front of goal moments later as Forfar sensed blood but it wasn’t until the 81st minute that they got their noses in front. There was a slice of fortune to Matty Allan’s strike as it took a deflection from a ruck of players in the box and scooped up and into the net but that mattered not a jot to the home fans or players who were sent into raptures.
However, the points weren’t secured until the dying seconds when McCallum saved Forfar with a brilliant point-blank stop to prevent Clyde sub Kian Leslie from snatching a point.
The victory moves Forfar ten clear of the drop zone and sees the Loons keep pace with East Fife in fifth.
A tough test awaits next week as the league leaders Stenny come to Station Park. Andy and the boys will have to be on top form to stretch their long unbeaten run, now at nine league matches, into double figures.
