Bonnyrigg Rose 4-0 Forfar Athletic
[Saturday, 04 May 2024 17:37]
The Loons travelled to New Dundas Park for the final fixture of the season keen to record a third successive victory in the League for the first time this season however it wasn’t to be with a second-half collapse against a more clinical Bonnyrigg Rose team.
The first half was a fairly even affair with neither team creating a clear-cut chance however it was the Loons who started better and looked more likely to score.
Both Matty Allan and Roberto Nditi had shots saved from within the packed Roses penalty box in the opening 10 minutes neither really troubling the home keeper. Josh Skelly’s attempted shots on 27mins and 41 mins were both narrowly wide of the post and Adam Hutchinson had a chance from a set piece on 44 mins but was also wide of the target.
Defensively the Loons stood strong first half limiting the home team attacks to high balls which were dealt with however Marc McCallum was called into action making a fantastic save diving low to his left palming away a header from what could have been an own goal as the cross looked to come of a Forfar players head within the crowded penalty box.
Kieran Inglis picked up a booking first half for a foul and we would see a change at halftime with Inglis being replaced by Mohammed.
Halftime 0-0
For anyone who hasn’t been to New Dundas Park the slope is a sight to behold and with the Loons playing downhill second half the large travelling support were hoping to see plenty of goals they stood behind at the bottom of the slope. Unfortunately for them and only 4 minutes into the second half the home team took the lead and then doubled it a mere 5 minutes after that.
Both goals came from poor defending of set pieces and not clearing the ball.
Loons manager Ray McKinnon rung more changes with Craig Thomson replacing Finn Robson, Mark Whatley replacing Tomas Brindlay and Seb Ross replacing Finlay Allan.
The fresh legs created chances for Stuart Morrison and Seb Ross but as had been the case all day both efforts were off target. Josh Skelly was replaced by Russell McLean as the management threw everything they had in an effort to get something out of the game but worse was to come for the visitors.
A speculative long ball from defence was intercepted with most of the Loons players pushing forward and Bonnyrigg attacked a pace with a 3 on 2. The ball was played out wide to Osadolor who cut it square to Wardell who slotted it home beating McCallum easily on 75 minutes.
Despite the Loons' efforts to get on the scoresheet Bonnyrigg were going for a fourth and were awarded a penalty which must have been right on the edge of the box. Martynuik converted the spot kick to make it four.
Fulltime 4-0
