Annan Athletic are the visitors to the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park on Saturday, the sides locked together on the 27 point mark in the William Hill League2 standings.
While Willie Gibson’s side were losing out 4-2 at home to East Kilbride a week back, Jim Weir’s charges were disappointingly inactive following the postponement of their scheduled fixture up at Elgin. The fact that Jim had one of his strongest pool of players this season available to him for the trip to Borough Briggs and on the back of the victory over Dumbarton made it all the more frustrating for the ‘Loons’ manager. However Jim is delighted to report an almost clean bill of health for this weekend as well with only long term injury victims Ross MacLean and Cormac Christie unavailable and both are also making great progress on the rehabilitation front. Skipper Stuart Morrison who was a possibility as far as squad participation a week back is certain to be at least on the bench for the visit of the Galabank outfit, a boost to all concerned.
A midweek friendly against Lochee United was also arranged in the wake of the Elgin postponement and Jim rated it a more than useful exercise as far as match fitness and game time in certain players legs were concerned. It also gave the six acquisitions to the player pool a further opportunity to bed in alongside their new colleagues.
Jim Weir is in no doubt that that Annan will be tough opponents. He is well aware that his counterpart Willie Gibson has strengthened his squad considerably since the first meeting between the sides this term in the Premier Sports Cup. He is no doubt that the ninety minutes on Saturday will be played out in a similar intensity to the visit of the ‘Sons’ two weeks back and hopes that once again the ‘Loons’ support will play their part. Naturally he is hoping for a similar outcome at the end of the ninety minutes at what is the first league encounter of a now a tough eight match programme before the end of next month, five of those games away fixtures.
The visitors will go into the game without the services of goalkeeper Charlie Albinson red carded in the closing embers of the East Kilbride fixture.
This will be the fourth time this term that the sides will have ‘crossed swords’. They fought out a 1-1 draw in the aforementioned cup tie at Annan, prior to the visitors winning the penalty shoot-out 4-2 in a July heat wave, before an Angus Mailer counter clinched the points for the home side at Station Park in September, Annan winning 3-1 in ‘baltic’ conditions in Dumfriesshire in mid December.
George Calder is the man in the middle for Saturday’s contest, the midweek KDM tie up at Cove the last time he took charge of a Forfar Athletic fixture
