The ‘Loons’ welcome Clyde to the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park on Saturday for a fixture that manager Jim Weir describes as an old fashioned ‘six pointer’.
The ‘Bully Wee’ head north with an impressive record in recent times, in fact throughout the season having remarkably lost only league four games to date, in that regard the best record of the ten clubs competing in the fourth tier of the SPFL. However what could end up to be a record number of drawn fixtures sees them some way off the leading duo of East Kilbride and Spartans in the current overall standings.
The Forfar manager is in no doubt in regard to the quality Saturday’s visitors have in their ranks, but he will send the home side out on to the park at the weekend convinced that the three points can be secured. As has been well documented all three games between the sides this term to date have added to Clyde’s draw column, the first two games goalless and dour, the third at New Douglas Park in January slightly better in quality, the Sutherland brothers on the score sheet in a 1-1 end result. Reflecting on those three encounters Jim Weir felt that although a share of the spoils was the correct outcome in the first two clashes, he is convinced that with just a little ‘rub of the green‘ the Athies could have headed home on match day three with a win under their belt.
On the injury front, the manager is delighted to welcome back Stuart Morrison to the match day squad after the head knock he picked up on his return to action against Annan and he is also delighted to report that Ross MacLean should be back in full training by the end of the month. Going into what is without doubt a hectic month of exceptionally tough fixtures on paper, Jim is delighted with the depth of his squad with all the new faces having added competition for places, in fact four of them Mason Munn, Aron Lynas, Tyler Pasnik and Callum Wilson earning a place in the starting line up at Meadowbank last Saturday.
As ever the manager is keeping Saturday’s starting eleven ‘close to his chest’ but a wee freshen up could be on the cards given last week’s goalless encounter and also the stiff programme ahead of the squad with six games due in a three week ‘window’.
Clyde received a big blow at Dumbarton last midweek when top scorer James Hilton received an injury against the ‘Sons’ which could rule him out for some period of time. Darren Young moved quickly to bring in Nathan Cannon on loan from the ‘Loons’ as a potential replacement, but of course he is not eligible to play against his parent club. James Hilton is one of five members of the Clyde squad who are already past the thirty competitive appearance milestone this season, Craig Howie, Tommy Robson, Jay Hogarth and Andy Murdoch the others, Jake Dolzanski, Angus Mailer, Martin Rennie and Scott Shepherd having reached that mark in starting appearances alone for the ‘Loons’.
Despite the plethora of live sporting action on the wee screen on Saturday home officials are still hopeful of a reasonable turnout for what is without doubt a vital game for the ‘Loons’, ten games remaining as of 5pm. on Saturday with six due on foreign soil.
The man in the middle on Saturday is Joel Kennedy whose last visit to Forfar was for the pre-Christmas clash with Edinburgh City.
