Preview
The ‘Loons’ welcome league leaders East Kilbride to the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park on Saturday for what is their penultimate home game of the William Hill League2 campaign.
For the second week running we go into a fixture which has almost a must win tag attached to it if the home side are to maintain their interest in attaining that final play-off place, although of course results elsewhere might determine otherwise. Jim Weir certainly has no doubt that it is a big game in every sense of the word for both sides. The manager was delighted that his players did the business against Elgin last weekend, their attitude to the task in hand spot on from the first whistle.
Jim has no doubt that the three points gained against the Borough Briggs outfit has given his players a great opportunity to end the season on the right note and the eleven players who go into battle tomorrow will do so with a positive game plan, the overall approach being to record what would be a first win of the season over Mick Kennedy’s side.
The Athies management team though know it will be no easy task against a visiting team who have had a fine first season in the SPFL. Jim for one recognises the power that East Kilbride have at their disposal with John Robertson who made nine appearances on loan from St. Johnstone for the ‘Loons’ in the covid wrecked 2020/21 season without finding the net, now admired it would appear by a few clubs from higher echelons being joined in the goal scoring stakes at K Park by Connor Young and Bobby McLuckie.
Disappointingly the home side may have to go into the contest without top scorer Martin Rennie who had to depart the scene at half time last week having opened the scoring with another well taken free kick. Blair Alston is also a doubt, while Jake Dolzanski serves the second game of a two match suspension.
On loan custodian Mason Munn is also side lined again and the club have moved quickly to bring in 19 year old Latvian keeper Rodrigo Vitols on an emergency seven day temporary transfer from Aberdeen as cover for Marc McCallum who made a couple of match winning saves in last Saturday’s second half.
The Forfar Athletic squad has undoubted depth within its ranks this season and this has shone through in recent games especially at home and that fortitude will be tested again on Saturday. A few perhaps slightly unsung heroes have been unearthed over the course of the campaign, mention in particular to loan players Scott Bright and Jake Sutherland who have established themselves as first team regulars as the season has progressed. Matty Allan has also done a sterling job at the heart of the defence, the non stop aggression and running power of Aron Lynas and Angus Mailer not for the first time evident in what was an all round effective team performance last weekend.
All those pieces of the ‘jig saw’ will have to fit into place against the side who currently lead the Spartans by a slender point in the two horse race for the title, an exciting ninety minutes in store hopefully for all of a Forfar Athletic persuasion in particular.
Josh Hay is the man in the middle on Saturday, the first time he will have taken charge of a game at Station Park.
